Between project leaders is one of mutual respect and equality. It is not hidden communication nor is it passed through the project manager because they need to satisfy their micromanagement addiction. Others on the team have seen how the project manager trusts and works well with the technical lead and business analysts so they feel comfortable taking on the responsibility themselves. It's obviously about movement and not that you're on a team like this where everyone knows it's about completing the project and not about individual egos. It doesn't matter who leads the project.
